BAJA OFF-GRID RETREAT

Location: Ensenada, Mexico

Scope: New Construction Residence & Artist Studio

Status: Concept Design

Guided by the clean lines and indoor–outdoor ethos of Mexican mid-century modern design, the retreat is conceived as an architecture that grows out of the landscape. The house terraces gently with the natural ridge, stepping down toward the ocean and nestling into the hillside so that it becomes part of the coastal terrain rather than sitting upon it. Framed views, shaded outdoor rooms, and breezeways extend daily life into the landscape, allowing the rhythms of the desert, sky, and sea to shape the experience of the home.

The retreat is also designed as a place of inspiration and creative focus. A semi-subterranean studio will tuck into the coastal hillside, partially embedded within the earth to provide quiet refuge, thermal stability, and a sense of immersion in the landscape. This intimate workspace opens toward the horizon while remaining sheltered by the land, creating a contemplative environment for making and reflection.

Thick concrete walls provide thermal mass to naturally stabilize interior temperatures, working in concert with carefully placed openings that encourage passive cooling and cross-ventilation. Water will be captured through fog collection and rainwater harvesting, transforming the site’s coastal climate into a renewable resource. Solar energy will power the retreat, supporting a resilient off-grid lifestyle.

NESTLED INTO THE COASTAL HILLSIDE, THE HOUSE BECOMES PART OF THE LAND ITSELF, A PLACE WHERE OCEAN, DESERT, AND SKY INSPIRE BOTH LIVING AND CREATING
